‘Hunger Games’ audio easter egg: obscure ’70s electronic gem from Laurie Spiegel

If you’ve seen The Hunger Games you might have noticed the eerie, atmospheric music playing during the film’s “cornucopia” scene. It turns out that the piece — called Sediment (YouTube below) — was composed 40 years ago by Laurie Spiegel, who played it on an analog synth and did the mixing with two stereo reel-to-reel decks, unplugging her refrigerator during takes in order to keep everything in tune.

this is what two gameboys, one of which is plugged into delay, phaser, distotion, and flanger pedals, recorded on to a reel to reel recorder sounds like. more of a gear experiment than an actual jam. i’ve only spent a few days on this song but i really dig it so far. hopefully, a finished version of this (along with a few other jams) will be released in a few weeks?

an0va performing IDENTITY FORMATION at the most recent ROCHESTER CHIP show, only 3 days ago. such an awesome set, a very fun show overall. i wish the camera caught more of the dancing girl who rushed the stage towards the end of this jam but all you people who missed the show are just going to have to use your imaginations!

Subpixel performing “Meeting of the Spirits”, a cover of the classic jam by the Mahavishnu Orchestra, at the February Rochester Chip show. The intense amount of awesomeness in this video and this entire performance is difficult to even handle. The best part? When I kick the extension cord and unplug the PA mid song at 2:03. :-[
